While being in the digital marketing field, I am absolutely in no doubt that there is no shortage of options to choose whether one should go for an in-house marketing team or approach an agency. I have always dealt with business owners asking me for opinions on the same. Well, my answer to them is, “THERE IS NO PERFECT CHOICE.” It all depends on the situational analysis. “WHERE ARE YOU NOW?” and “WHERE DO YOU WANT TO BE IN FUTURE?”

With the very changing dynamic environment, marketing in today’s world depends on many factors like competition, consumer buying behavior, technology, and more. Let’s answer a few questions to deal with the choice.
- What is your business model?
- What is your budget?
- Which of the above is cost-effective?
- Are you looking for a short-term or a long-term solution?
Once you establish what you want, you must thoroughly compare in-house team vs. agency and jot down the factors, pros, and cons before selecting the right platform. Check out my take when it comes to deciding on the same.
In-house | Agency | |
Creativity | The in-house team has in-depth knowledge and understanding of your direct competitors. However, with creative minds purely devoted to you, it may lead to boredom and may stagnate creativity. | With the agency handling several unique and diverse client accounts, their minds are fresh, innovative, and creative. However, having similar clients means – direct competitors, which may lead to a conflict of interest. |
Adaptability (Speed it up) | The in-house team is easily adaptable to any change, implements strategies quickly, allocates the marketing budget, and, more importantly, prioritizes the task. Also, the timelines are amendable. | Agency, in comparison, will be relatively slower depending on their existing client’s workload, priorities, and other internal processes. However, an agency offers valuable insights into the strategy optimization process. |
Flexibility | The in-house team is more flexible and scalable, even though a lack of skills may constrain you. | Yes, it is flexible. However, it comes with a cost in terms of fees and other expenses. |
Availability | The in-house team is always available in case of quick changes and course corrections. They provide a little more fluidity in terms of a quick turnaround as they understand the need and dynamics of the requirement. | Agencies have limitations as they are not with the brand team all the time, seated next to them, and understand the immediate need. However, a dedicated account management team can surely solve this issue to a great extent. |
Cost | The in-house team incurs costs in recruitment and selection, training and development, tools and software, salaries and retentions, and therefore will be more expensive. | An agency takes care of its tools, technology, software, and team, and as a result of this, cutting costs at your end. Cost is negotiable. |
So, which is better?
As I said earlier, “THERE IS NO PERFECT CHOICE.” And if you are still confused about arriving at a solution, you can consider having a hybrid marketing team. Most big shots inherit this strategy where you can have the best of both on your platter. You will be able to manage your workflows and take control of the results effectively. However, it might be expensive in some cases and not suitable for small firms. So, who knows your business better than you? So, break down your needs and aims, and make the right move.
